"You can design and create, and build the most wonderful place in the world. But it takes people to make the dream a reality."

I. Exploring Main Street! Take a trip through a little town taken straight from 1890's America. Visit the shops, dine at the restaurants- but don't forget you are here on a mission. As an Apprentice, you will need to gather some supplies. A weapon, or tool for producing magic.

But we understand if that corn dog cart on Market Street is your first stop.

II. Apprentice Class 101! Practice your spell casting and weaponship on the open commons behind the Firehouse. Sparring, casting or just general confusion abound here. Try not to hit anything or...anyone, the paint on the infirmary is still drying.

III. Look out! A level 2 corroded monster has managed to get onto Main Street! Protect the citizens and defeat the cur, and please watch the damage, the paint is still wet!

IV. One Little Spark! Go ahead, show us the strength of your imagination and come up with your own scenarios. Just, stay out of the Corroded Lands...if possible.

"A fighter with an entourage, huh?" It sounded like something out of a book, but then again, they were all supposed to be using their imaginations, here, so why not?

"Well, then, consider me Lady Lydia of Maitland Keep, at your service." She rolled up the sleeves of her long black dress, tulle and webbing trailing everywhere as though her Goth Fairy Godmother had gone a bit overboard, and produced her wand from the camera bag at her side.

"What's the plan?"

"Oh yes, I've been part of more than one merry band of adventurers back home," Sylvando said. "But they'll be time to discuss that later."

"For now, my dear Lady Lydia, if you could come up with a distraction for our big hairy friend here, it will be much appreciated," he said. "Normally, that's a bit more my area, but The Great Sylvando is nothing if not versatile."

At any rate they seem to have drawn the attention of the vaguely feline monster, so whatever they planned to do, it would likely be a good idea to do it quickly.

Being a cat owner herself, it was easy to think of a distraction. She pointed her wand at a nearby topiary, grinning as she cried out: "Overlook, overlook, overlook!"

It changed shape immediately to a massive hound, glowing red eyes appearing from within the foliage, and growled at the cat.

Her next trick, now that she had its attention, would be making the shubbery mobile...

Ooh, now that was clever! And it certainly seemed to have gotten the monster's attention, as it turned to growl at the new apparent threat.

Which gave Sylvando time to adjust the angle of his strike so the blow would deal more damage. He lunged, bringing his sword down in a sweeping strike across the monster's left flank, cutting a long gash and causing it to yowl in pain. He danced nimbly out of the way of its claws as it turned to retaliate, the move made somewhat clumsy by its injury.

"Ooh, he didn't like that!", Slyvando said, grinning. "Think you can grab his attention again, darling?"

Lydia let out a whoop of encouragement as Sylvando struck, grinning. It was a brief moment of cheerleading, though, as she was already letting her imagination churn before he'd even asked. It took some focusing and a little thought, but the topiary hound pulled its verdant paws loose from the soil, claws made of roots scrabbling against the sidewalk as it bounded toward the Corrupt cat with a growl that sounded like a concentrated, deep rustle of leaves.

"On it!"

OK, count Sylvando impressed. Attack topiary; what would they think of next? Still, threatening as mobile shrubbery appeared, he doubted it would be able to do a great deal of damage on its own. Unlike the plant monsters from his own world, it really was just a shrub, and hardly created for battle.

Luckily, he was capable of providing the damage-dealing in this case. As the creature turned partway, snarling defiance at the approaching bush and bracing itself to attack, Sylvando lashed out again, this time cutting deeply into the creature's foreleg, staggering it, and managing a second stroke that blinded its nearer eye before it managed to take a swipe at him in retaliation. "That's it kitty," he called as he jumped clear of both the cat's claws and the approaching bush dog, "just keep paying attention to the mean, nasty doggie. It's much more of a threat than silly old Sylvando."

Really, it was all a certain horror author she'd grown fond of over one summer vacation, not her original thought at all. But she'd happily tell him about that later, once it was all over. For now, her focus remained on keeping the topiary on its toes, having it circle the Corrupted cat, keeping up that growl. The cat swiped at the foliage, sending leaves and twigs showering down around it.

And those claws being occupied by slashing at twigs and leaves gave Sylvando the opening he needed. Approaching the creature on its now blind side, he brought his sword down hard on its neck. While not as effective as a heavier sword or an ax would have been, it did enough damage to effectively cripple the creature, sending it toppling, and allowing Sylvando to land the finishing blow with a second stroke to the neck.

He stepped back a bit from the fallen creature, watching it a bit warily, just in case it wasn't quite dead. "Score one for the good guys," he said. "Not as neat a finish as I'd like, but with a big, burly thing like this, it can't be helped."

"Neat or no, you definitely killed it." Now that the threat was gone, the topiary beast sunk its root-claws into the closest available patch of soil and settled down to a life of slightly relocated peace. Lydia moved in close to inspect the creature's corpse, not afraid at all of the puddle of whatever it happened to bleed, simply curious, her eyes wide.

"We make a good team."

"That we do, my Lady Lydia," he said, bowing theatrically in her direction.

He then took a moment to give his sword a quick cleaning on the grass before sheathing it again. Turning back to Lydia, he asked, "I must say, the topiary creature was a very nice touch. Wherever did you come up with the idea?"

"Thanks." She smiled, a little sheepish. "I read about it in a book about a haunted hotel. The main character is this writer who goes up there with his wife and son to take care of it in the winter, when no one's there, and he goes kind of ... crazy. Okay, a lot of crazy. But at one point, he has this nightmare where the topiaries come to life and chase him, and I thought: what if I could make it real?"

"Interesting," Sylvando said. "Especially the mix of something potentially so beautiful amidst something so frightening. Though I am rather glad you chose that aspect rather than any of the bits that drove the man to madness. Until we know better how far the magic in this world extends, best not to take too many chances with such things."

"And on another note I've got to say, I'm surprised this hasn't dissolved by now," he said, gingerly poking the dead cat monster with the toe of his shoe. "Back home the monsters at least have the courtesy of vanishing into smoke when defeated."

bahaa nice game trope lampshading XD

strangeandunusual: (you have my vague interest)
From: [personal profile] strangeandunusual
"Yeah, no. Plus, a lot of the stuff that made him go crazy had to do with the building, and dead guests, and ... I don't think I could pull any of that off. Not yet."

She does smirk a little at the thought, though, because really, how cool would it be to bring her favorite horror books and movies to life as a line of defense? She's beginning to realize that she might even be able to do some of the same things as Adam and Barbara, here, and it's setting her mind spinning with gothic glee.

"They vanish? What happens to their bones?"
