Character Meet and Greet: Winter Wonderful!

Rules | FAQ | Premise | Applications

i.Main Street

Main Street has settled in for January, but there are still Christmas Decorations here and there to liven things up a little bit. Feel free to shop, mingle with the locals or explore the castle grounds.

Though after hours there are still some shadows that venture into the streets. Not everything here is as peaceful as it seems, and it’s best to defeat the corroded trespassers before they cause trouble.

ii. Cookie Overload

Do you like free cookies? Of course! Everyone does. After the Christmas Rush, there are plenty to go around, available only after the sun goes down to any hungry passerby. There are cookies of all styles and flavors. But watch out for the dreader sriracha cookie. It will make you breathe fire in three flavors and gives a bit of heartburn after, but the aftertaste will leave you craving more.

iii. The Eighth Wonder of the World
Now that the jungle has been purified, Apprentices can wander through to explore all the things the jungle has to offer. Take a (still somewhat shambly) riverboat and explore the river, or come to chat and trade with the villagers. (Shrunken heads, two for one special!) But beware. Even though the jungle is purified, it’s not a safe place. In this kingdom of animals, someone is always hungry.

iv. Pin It On Them
Some smugglers are hanging around the outskirts of New Orleans, selling dubious looking items from even more dubious looking bags. Do you buy from them? Haggle? Steal? (not recommended) Or quietly try to alert any sort of authority (good luck) The choice is yours.

v. Battle Mesa Gate
While the jungle may be purified, many other Kingdoms are still seething with corrosion. Erstwhile Apprentices will find such corrosion on the banks of the Rivers of America, right where the jungle river joins in. Fight corroded creatures on the shore and in the water and be careful, they are stronger than they look and cleverer than they seem.

Crinkling her nose at the incredulous notes in his voice, she turned to face him. "I am beginning to tire of that reaction, perhaps you could enlighten me on why it is such an unreasonable request." Did people in later eras cease to use it as a sleep aide, pain reliever, or a cure for digestive issues? Either way she was determined to finish kitting out her first aide supplies.

"For starters what year were you from?"

Beetlejuice grinned, unbothered. “Most recently? 2019.”

"2019?!" Unable to fully suppress her surprise. "Well in that case... I would have been disappointed if there hadn't been any advancements in medical sciences." That at least caused her to drop the soured expression.

"I'm from 1898." It was still unfathomable for all of this to be real but.. perhaps she should look for a compendium of modern medicines.

"That explains things. Breathers decided that stuff was dangerous and you'd have to go through a ton of hoops to get it."

The demon ran a hand through his hair. "I think this place uses a fair amount of healing sparkle magic." Waggle fingers to emphasize.

"Breathers...? Is that some colloquial term I'm not acquainted with?" Apparently not having realized she was speaking to an otherworldly being. "What nonsense. I've been using laudanum on my patients with no ill effect for years!"

"Yes, so I have been told. They also seem to dissuade the use of practical remedies." Sounding a little put out with the notion of being obsolete in some capacity. "Still- I see no reason why I shouldn't be prepared in the event that no healer is present."

"It's another word for the living," Beetlejuice explained. "Yeah, don't look at me, lady. Stuff's probably made more people happy than not happy, but, what do I know?"

He was a little irked about not having his full range of powers, so he understood feeling put out about being there.

And he felt she had a point. "The more stuff we have available, the better it is if something goes wrong."

His concern was keeping Lydia safe, and he didn't see any reason a lady doctor from the 19th century wouldn't be able to help in that.

"Implying, what exactly? That you are not among the living?" Finding that a trifling hard to believe. He looked animated enough though he should have a word with both a tailor and barber for doing something about this rumpled, disheveled look of his. "I suppose the decision really wasn't in either of our hands." That much she would allow.

At least they had managed to stumble upon some common ground. His complaints lay in the removal of his powers, and her in the products that were available.

"Precisely. How forward thinking of you." Genuinely impressed that he was not going to argue with her like some of the others had. When she was out on excavations they often took her and her men to remote locations where getting to medical attention could be dicey. You needed something on hand to deal with problems as they arose or you might not make it long enough to return to the more populated areas. Also, it would have pleased her to be labeled a 'lady doctor' by yet another being. Scoff though Emerson might at her dabbling in the medical field it had helped them out innumerable times. Him especially since he often needed stitching up, and the first time they had met in Amarna he had been violently ill. It was only from her constant care that he made a full recovery.

"Right! I'm dead, I'm a demon." There really hadn't ever been a situation he'd been in where he didn't own up to that fact.

She immediately won him over by paying him a compliment. Even though his 'forward thinking' was basically a way to keep his bffff safe, and not so much anyone else.

Although a few people were starting to grow on him.

"Yeah, we didn't really get to choose this destination. I've already written several strongly worded letters."

Finding herself unable to repress it she chuckled at his admission. "Really, you must think that I am a-" but before she could finish the thought she noticed his expression remained unaltered. "You're serious?" That did not rule out the possibility that he was deluded in his beliefs but this was no afreet standing before her. Apparently a wizard and an alleged God of the Underworld complete with flaming hair was not enough to convince her that there were more supernatural beings to come.

Whatever the motivations at least there was someone that he cared for the safety of. To put one before yourself was a noble quality.

"Have you now? And to whom are they addressed?" There was something quite peculiar about this individual but he was amusing at any rate. Not an unpleasant sort.

"Yep. A Netherworld demon, though, I guess here that's important to denote. Normally, I'd show you something awesome to prove it, but, our abductors apparently removed all our powers so we could be more useful or something. I kind of went into a rage fugue, and didn't really pay attention."

He grinned at her question. "All of the Welcoming Committee. I've also been leaving Yelp reviews on the board." A small part of Beetlejuice hoped that if he made himself just obnoxious enough, he could get himself and Lydia the heck out of Dodge.

It was, admittedly, a plan that had not been thought out at all.
