I. Exploring Main Street! Take a trip through a little town taken straight from 1890's America. Visit the shops, dine at the restaurants- but don't forget you are here on a mission. As an Apprentice, you will need to gather some supplies. A weapon, or tool for producing magic.

But we understand if that corn dog cart on Market Street is your first stop.

II. Apprentice Class 101! Practice your spell casting and weaponship on the open commons behind the Firehouse. Sparring, casting or just general confusion abound here. Try not to hit anything or...anyone, the paint on the infirmary is still drying.

III. Look out! A level 2 corroded monster has managed to get onto Main Street! Protect the citizens and defeat the cur, and please watch the damage, the paint is still wet!

IV. One Little Spark! Go ahead, show us the strength of your imagination and come up with your own scenarios. Just, stay out of the Corroded Lands...if possible.

"Fairy," Fethry supplied readily, but he looked quite puzzled. "Gee, you were using your magic without trying or anything? I wonder what I'm doing wrong..."

A pause, and then, "Also, I thought boys were kings and girls were queens."

"No," Ivy sighed. "Xanth is only allowed a King, and they must be Magician level. Even though girl Magicians are called Sorceresses, mother says that's just outdated sexism from patriarchal idiots insecure about their place in the world. Probably also why they only allow a King. But there have been women Kings before! And one time, a night mare, she saved the whole Kingdom." Ivy laughed suddenly, "Maybe that's why it always has to be a King? So it stays a Kingdom?" she shook her head in bemusement.

"Okay, I will use my magic on you, and that should help you figure out how to do it! Sound good? My friend Chex can fly, but she had to touch herself with her tail to use her magic. It might be a trick like that! But we should both be careful, so you don't overdo it. Fairies get um, four kinds of magic! It's really neat! I only had the one back home, but I have two here! Are you ready? Focus real hard on what you want."

Oh, Fethry's head was officially spinning - the idea that a Kingdom needed a King to stay a Kingdom made enough sense, to him, but the talk about magic... That was a lot of information. And there was one detail that had him particularly concerned.

"Wait, wait... I have to focus? I'm... Not so good at that."

[enhancomancer]

"What happens if you do not?" it might be a clue!

"Well, I usually do not! And I get by," Fethry explained with a shrug. "Focusing is just hard. My brain mixes things up sometimes, I guess."

"That could be interesting! It shouldn't make the magic not work, it'll just get re-oriented to your new focus! I'm sure it will be real fun! Let's try it!" Ivy suggested with undiminished enthusiasm.
