I. Exploring Main Street! Take a trip through a little town taken straight from 1890's America. Visit the shops, dine at the restaurants- but don't forget you are here on a mission. As an Apprentice, you will need to gather some supplies. A weapon, or tool for producing magic.

But we understand if that corn dog cart on Market Street is your first stop.

II. Apprentice Class 101! Practice your spell casting and weaponship on the open commons behind the Firehouse. Sparring, casting or just general confusion abound here. Try not to hit anything or...anyone, the paint on the infirmary is still drying.

III. Look out! A level 2 corroded monster has managed to get onto Main Street! Protect the citizens and defeat the cur, and please watch the damage, the paint is still wet!

IV. One Little Spark! Go ahead, show us the strength of your imagination and come up with your own scenarios. Just, stay out of the Corroded Lands...if possible.

"Oh, all right then," Rose relaxed some. "I was born on Earth. One without magic, obviously."

Apropos of nothing. But it also meant avoiding bringing up Satan ever with Aahz.

She tilted her head to the side. "Didn't know demons used tech to get around dimensions. Not sayin' that's bad, that's what I used, just surprised is all."

"different sorts for different Demons," he said with a shrug. "Tanda uses an impressive wiggle and clap move. Massah has a ring that I'm pretty sure was meant to be a necklace. People from Earth" and how you get Humans from Earth was beyond him, "tend to have lifespans too short to master magic and tech and weapons. And generally your lot pick weapons over the rest, with tech next... mostly so you can build better weapons. Now there is nothing wrong with a good weapon in its place." Usually its place was inside the skin of a foe, after all. "But once you get to be my age you appreciate a balance. Magic, tech, weapons. All working together with cunning."

Rose's eyes dimmed even further, and her shoulders hunched.

"Is that the only way to fight the darkness?"

"There is never only one way to fight anything. That's the problem with many of your sort of demons, thinking that there is only one way and charging blindly past all other options."

[bigbadrose]

"Good point!!!" she did a total one hundred eighty degree turn and fist-punched the air. "Then I am going to fight it with light!!! As soon as I figure out what the hell that even means!!"

[situational_ethics]

A bit of a snort. "When you figure out, be sure to tell me." He could use the laugh.

"Wot?" Rose beamed cheekily. "You don't think a torch in their eyes won't impede them a bit, maybe even burn?"

[situational_ethics]

"Provided they have eyes," he said with a bit of a grin. "Creatures of darkness often lack them. Better to scream at them and hope for ears."

[bigbadrose]

"This is why I need my own sonic screwdriver," she huffed bitterly. "It can do sound and vibration and radios and anything that transmits waves. All right then, how do creatures of the dark sense how to attack and eat?"

[situational_ethics]

"Depends on the creature. I knew one race where they found food by the taste of the ground. Others use sound or scent, or vibration sure. Some have symbiotes to help them out. Too many Demons in too many Dimensions for a one size fits all answer."

[bigbadrose]

"So what you're sayin' is.... I really need a sonic screwdriver."

Sigh.

"All right then, how do you plan to fight? If you go the fightin' darkness route, instead a' bitin' off the heads of whoever you think has your D-hopper, yeah?"

[situational_ethics]

"Pretty sure that's the opposite of what I was saying, actually," he replied dryly. "What I was saying is that there is no one universal answer or tool. But my plan is to start with basic recon. Fighting the Darkness might not be the right play at all."

[bigbadrose]

"That's what makes the screwdriver so perfect, it's adaptable."

As for the rest.... "Riiiiight. Any way I can help? If they really do have my cannon, I don't want anyone touching it, they'll only make things worse."

"The most useful and adaptable tool anyone has is their brain. The rest is just details. And could use the help," he said with a nod. "Mind using the fact that you're cute to get us some info?"

[bigbadrose]

Rose bit her thumb. "I've always thought that... But I'm lousy at school, and I can't do magic. Think it was sucked out of my universe or something."

She beamed at the request, practically glowing. "I think I'd be very good at that. Who d'ya need me to con?" The Doctor and Jack never let her use her cuteness to conquer!!! Clearly it was just too powerful!

“You need the right teachers is all, the settings are irrelevant. As for magic, You’d need someone to check the force lines on your dimension, I know a guy I could recommend.”

“Start asking questions of those who have been here longer. You play cute sweet and innocent, I’ll play up that pervect reputation, and when we compare answers we might find something close to the truth between.”

"I'll try anything once, even if I have tried magic before..."

And a nod. "Mm!! Okay!!" she is desperately latching onto having a new mission; something easy to focus on and distract her from the fact that this all might mean she can't get back to the Doctor.

He nodded. "Questions should focus on what exactly is the conflict, what can we learn about the other side, how do they expect us to fight, why do they expect us to fight, how will we be compensated, how do we get our stuff back, and if they wanted help why didn't they just ask."

Rose hummed quietly. She already knew what the conflict was!

"Corrosion is what happens in the final stages before darkness. Nothingness, unreality. A corroding timeline starts falling into heavy decay, destruction, death, but then it undoes itself, it goes dark, nothing at all, not even part of the void."

She rubbed the back of her head. "They expect us to fight with magic, but I don't got any!" she insisted again.

And a Bad Wolf huff, "And we'll be compensated in things still existing, including us, and I think this is asking, it's not like they kidnapped us... well maybe they kidnapped you, okay I'll make sure no one's been kidnapped against their will!!"

He shook his head. "Not looking for your answers, looking for theirs. Get it?"

"Yes sir," an eye roll she didn't really hide. Ahhhhh this was the problem with getting missions from anyone else, Rose didn't really take orders well, even from her Dad.

"Trust me, hearing how someone else says something, even when you already know the information, ESPECIALLY then... it tells you more about the person than they ever intended to reveal."

[bigbadrose]

She whines like a wolf puppy. "I guess... But I've been fighting the darkness all by myself for so long it feels weird to treat them like enemies!!"

[situational_ethics]

"Different kinds of Darkness, might be that we should even be fighting for it. Or negotiating peace. But we won't know trapped in expectations."

Rose crinkled her face. You can't argue with darkness. Or negotiate. "Ever try to negotiate with an infection?"
