He can't sense it, not really. But he's seen enough of people in his six millennia to have a small inkling of what she's going through. And there are pieces to fit together. She has some kind of twisted mother figure and is trying to get out of her shadow, but afraid to do so-- Perhaps not even sure if she can.

Well he understands that sentiment well enough. Not for him of course. But for others he knows a bit more intimately.
